Chapter Fifteen

Wicky

Wicky admittedly had done some dumb shit in his life, but letting two of his best friends go drinking, on foreign soil, without someone sober to pour them into bed afterward? He wasn’t that dumb. He designated himself as the sober one for the evening without saying a word.

Besides, someone had to record choice events of the evening. For posterity.

The bar they ended up at was on base, and it looked like every other Army dive bar in existence. The interior was dim, all wooden walls, dart boards in every other corner, a pool table lurking off in the back area, with lots of simple tables and chairs dotting the open room. The place didn’t look all that packed, about half capacity, and the two bartenders seemed to be as occupied playing therapist as they were pouring drinks. About as expected at this time of the day. No doubt it would start really hopping later on in the evening.

Anticipating that these two were going to get beyond plastered, Wicky steered them to a corner table, well out of the way of the other patrons, then fetched shots and a beer from the bar for all three of them. Walking back to the table, he observed the two. Nico looked torn between doing damage to something and cuddling an obviously upset Garen. Garen, usually a rock of logic and calm, had sunk in on himself, just staring at his folded hands and giving off the vibe of murder.

Oh yeah. Wicky was so glad he was smart enough to take these two drinking.

“Oooh, flamethrower,” Nico crooned with an expression of homicide on his face.

Wicky eyed him sideways as he put the man’s shot on the table. “Out of context, that was terrifying.”

Nico didn’t blink. “I’m sure I can orchestrate an accidental flamethrower incident where Spencer gets it right in the face.”

Downing his shot, Garen informed him, “You’re reaching, Tig.”

“Dammit, you’re such a killjoy.”

“I still think your first idea was your best. Bash him over the head and let him accidentally fall into the river. Let the crocodiles take care of him.”

Yeah…so the usual Garen had obviously decided to take a vacation. Homicidal Garen was now in the house. Wicky made with the distraction. Besides, he was curious and honestly wanted to know.

“I promised not to ask, but damn, you guys are making serial killers look friendly right now. Do I need to pull back up the list of indigenous creatures that can kill?”

Garen shot him a suspicious look. “That’s what you and Nico were really doing on the boat, isn’t it?”

“It’s a very nice list,” Nico offered, tone hopeful.

“That’s Plan B.”

So, still on the table, huh? Granted, Bel and his familiars had no chill when it came to each other. People looking in from the outside thought Garen and Nico were the protective ones, and Bel was the cute thing they protected. Really, they were all equal in that regard. Bel would absolutely throw hands (magically speaking) if anything dangerous came near his men.
